Summary: This case study explored state efforts to expand access to cessation support by allowing pharmacists to dispense tobacco cessation medication in the absence of a prescription from the tobacco user’s physicians. It provides background on the rationale for standing orders, important components of a standing order, and challenges a state might face in implementing standing orders.
The case study showcases Indiana’s Standing Order, but other states and their approaches to expanding pharmacists’ roles in support of tobacco cessation are also identified.
